Before disassembly the BigLift tower with 4el SteppIR and 2el 40m Cushcraft was carried to the fieldday site at more than 100m distance. Manfred told us it was quite a task. On Saturday Manfred had almost everything going already incl. antennas, portable shack and generator power. The only thing missing was the radio equipment which still was in my car. This year it took me 7 hours on the crowded highways to reach the site, at ~13:30Z - too late. So Manfred started to call the JAs on 20m with an FT857 barefoot and paperlog. At ~14:00Z we were ready to go but the condx were not. Late in the evening the bands finally woke up and produced a few nice US runs on 20m and later on 40m, even to the midwest. Compared to our proven A3S + 40m Moxon setup the 4el SteppIR and XM240 seemed sharper and quieter. The only downside of the higher gain antennas was the need to turn them frequently between G, northern DL and RA, even on 40m. To the end the JAs on 20m were louder than ever. Despite our poor start we passed our last year's record and even came close to our 2003 score when 160m was still allowed for phone. At the end there is little hope that the cow dung will ever disappear from my Heil footswitch and that there will be a time when you don't need to keep a separate single-VFO radio solely for the annual fieldday due to the rules. We all hope Manfred will be able to move his station to another hill - good luck! Thanks to Tom/DL2RMC for supporting us and to our great hilltop team for moving around the massive antennas with their agricultural machines! 73, Stefan DL1IAO for the DM1A/p FD-Team DL1IAO@contesting.com http://www.dl1iao.com
